Laurel Property Taxes Increasing 30 Percent

Residents in Laurel are preparing for a substantial increase in property taxes, set to take effect on October 1st. The town's property taxes will surge by 30%, a decision that was made by the Sussex County town back in June as part of the 2023-2024 fiscal budget. The town is raising taxes in large part to fund the hiring of two new police officers, a move that Town Manager Jamie Smith says will help combat the increasing crime rate in the area.

St. Louis County OKs $155 million in tax breaks for Boeing

The St. Louis County Council voted 4-1 Tuesday night to approve $155 million in tax incentives for Boeing Co.'s proposed $1.8 billion development near St. Louis Lambert International Airport. The deal gives the aerospace company a 50% cut in real estate and personal property taxes over the next 10 years. It also allows for some building materials to be exempt from sales and use tax.

City leaders are pondering whether not nominating someone to the Brazoria County Appraisal District board would have a greater impact than if they did. Every taxing entity in the county can nominate someone to the board. A full board consists of five members, with the tax assessor-collector serving as a sixth, non-voting member. The board does not set appraisal values, but is charged with hiring the chief appraiser, who does.
