ALABAMA

Tax liens against Mobile mall up for auction

The owner of Shoppes at Bel Air in Mobile is delinquent on their taxes. Records show Bell Air Mall Realty Holding LLC out of New York owes $697,942. "There is the main parcel with taxes that are around $650,000, and then there are four other parcels that total somewhere around $50,000," said Mobile County Revenue Commission Attorney Tyler Pritchett.

According to Chief Appraiser Danny Womack, the board of assessors is mandated by state law assess a property's value at or as close as possible to market values. The state performs an audit each year, he said, and there are stiff penalties for failing to follow those market values.

Honolulu Council's latest property tax bills aim to confront rising home values

The council's budget committee held a special meeting on Monday to discuss the Blangiardi administration's proposed budget for the next fiscal year, which begins in July.

Many times though, their spirit survives in the hearts and minds of the loved ones in their lives. But in some cases, the deceased actually do live on – in property tax rolls in New Orleans. "This is a crime punishable by at least six months in jail and a $500 fine," New Orleans Inspector General Ed Michel said.

Magna gets 12-year tax break on massive plant expansion

The abatement — set at 50% for up to 12 years —is part of a much larger local and state commitment to support the company's $426.6 million addition in operations since breaking ground last fall.

Lauderdale County weighs tax-exempt status on unused church

A former church in Lauderdale County may lose its tax-exempt status after the Board of Supervisors on Monday held a public hearing to give the community a chance to weigh in. Board Attorney Lee Thaggard said New Morning Star Baptist Church, located at 502 Church St., did not appear to be in use for regular church services.

City of Long Branch, decided May 5, 2023, that ”Freeze Act” protections afforded all judgments of the Tax Court and County Tax Boards apply unless appropriate proofs plainly establishing the presence of specifically enumerated statutory exceptions are demonstrated.

CAD board chairman announces resignation

The chairman of the Victoria County Central Appraisal District board is planning to step down, the chief appraiser of the district confirmed Tuesday. Lou Svetlik's resignation could be accepted following a discussion between CAD board members, Chief Appraiser Keri Wickliffe said. 


Milam Appraisal District values fall below state value assignment in Rockdale

Rockdale ISD is faced with losing state funding because the locally appraised values of homes and businesses did not reach the 95 percent of sales prices, the ratio mandated in state law. Lesley Sootoo, Chief Appraiser for Milam County District, said the appraisal district and local schools learned of the study results in early February.


VIRGINIA

Why some Richmonders saw a huge spike in their car tax bill this year

It's Richmond personal property tax season, and thousands of locals got hit with car tax bills significantly higher than last year. What's happening: Around 13,300 vehicles were incorrectly assessed last year resulting in lower-than-they-should-be car values, per an announcement posted to the city's finance department website. The city corrected the error this year, and owners of those 13,300 cars saw an increase in assessed value.
