CALIFORNIA

California To Build Affordable Homes Next To Infamous San Quentin Prison

California state officials will hold a public hearing Thursday to gather feedback from residents of Marin County about the state's plans to construct a large affordable housing complex on property next to the San Quentin State Prison. If approved, the Oak Hill Apartments will consist of 250 units of 100% affordable housing on an 8.5-acre parcel that once functioned as a gun range.


IDAHO

Idaho Senate signs off on property tax overhaul

A complicated property tax overhaul is headed to Gov. Brad Little's desk. After an hour's debate, the Senate overwhelmingly passed House Bill 292 — which promises up to $355 million in immediate property tax cuts, but also carries heavy short- and long-term implications for public schools.


NORTH CAROLINA

Some Mecklenburg County malls saw drop in property value

For several decades, malls have been on a steady decline. Experts point to online shopping and the pandemic. Now, the assessed value of some of Mecklenburg County's malls shows a drop in property value. “It's been very difficult for some of those malls to hold onto tenants given the issues we've seen with crime, and other issues around the city," attorney Larry Shaheen, who handles property valuation appeals, said.


PENNSYLVANIA

Borough agrees to compromise with Rite Aid on property assessment appeal

A national pharmacy chain in downtown Shenandoah may get a slight property tax break soon, if the school district and county agree to the compromise approved by borough council. Council approved Monday night a stipulation with Shenandoah RX Assoc., LLC, the holding company owned by Rite Aid Corporation for its downtown Shenandoah store.

Houston Law Firms Go Big On Space, Propping Up Office Market

Houston law firms are playing an outsized role in sustaining the city's office market, particularly downtown, as other firms move farther out to be closer to workers amid the rise of hybrid work. While many tenants are paring their spaces by as much as half as leases come up for renewal and relocating farther west, law firms are signing up for bigger, more expansive spaces and spending big money on remodeling. 


Texas property tax legislation move to full senate

A Texas bill and a series of joint resolutions that promise to lower property taxes move to the full senate after a committee vote on Monday. The Senate Finance Committee voted unanimously to move Senate Bill 5 and Senate Joint Resolutions 3, 4 and 5 forward. SB 3 and SB 4 previously received committee approval.
