Niagara Falls hotels group worried about property tax hike
Niagara Falls city staff and council say a 7.4 per cent tax increase is necessary to maintain services and address financial pressures, but the local hotel industry says it cannot absorb a significant hike as it slowly recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Office vacancies halting growth in downtown property values

The amount of vacant office space in Des Moines' central business district has more than doubled in the past four years, adversely affecting the value of office property in downtown. In 2022's fourth quarter, 17.9%, or 1.16 million square feet, of the downtown area's more than 6.5 million square feet of office space was vacant, CBRE's market report shows.

ExxonMobil Oil's former headquarters, a 45-story skyscraper at 800 Bell St., is becoming a residential project. Built in 1962, the 1.2 million-sf downtown tower has been vacant for nearly eight years. ExxonMobil had moved its operations to Spring in 2015. The 606-ft tower and its nearby parking garage was sold by Shorenstein Properties at the end of 2022.
