Suburban homeowner's property tax bill skyrockets from $1,800 to over $30K

A homeowner in unincorporated Chicago Heights is reeling after receiving a property tax bill that assessed his modest 1950s home at over $1 million. Darryl Lloyd, who purchased the three-bedroom, one-bathroom house in 2006 for $115,000, maintains its current market value is just over $180,000.

Report due soon: Many homes were ‘critically over-assessed’

The Board of Assessors is planning to release an outside audit confirming that some Marblehead neighborhoods were “critically over-assessed,” while others were undervalued in last year's assessment, according to Chair John Kelley. The board meets again this Friday at noon. In January, many homeowners complained that their property valuations, and tax bills, jumped for no apparent reason.

Tenants signed 11.5M SF of office leases during the first half of 2024, 11% more than through this time in 2023. “It's a recovery in the sense that we're ahead of where we were at the same time last year,” said Andrew Lim. “We're also tracking more active requirements in the market and have a better sense that more leasing is on the horizon, which was not the feeling we had in the first half of 2023.”

King County assessor: Valuations of office properties poised for steep drop
