Top Democrats, Republicans join together on 11th-hour property tax deal

Republican and Democratic state lawmakers have joined with business interests and others on a property tax compromise that would permanently lower overall tax rates and limit the growth of certain portions of property owners' bills. The measure, announced Monday morning, is being introduced on the last possible day; it has less than 72 hours to pass before the legislature adjourns Wednesday night.

Woman forced to sell home after property tax soars 174%

A woman said she was forced to sell her home after her property tax soared 174%. Tamra Ransom, said she had purchased her dream home in Polk County, Florida last year in May. Per the outlet, however, her property tax soared 174%, from $2,700 a year to $4,700. The hike made it too expensive for Ransom to continue living at the home, according to The Daily Mail, and forced her to put the property back on the market.

Ohio lawmakers discuss overhauling property tax system in light of massive value hike

Local government officials last week told state lawmakers that restoring slashed state funding and reining in tax abatements would go a long way in addressing concerns about tax increases fueled by historic property value increases. Those comments came in a hearing of a joint legislative committee formed this year after state mandated assessments sent property values skyrocketing, causing huge tax increases for some communities.
