It might be time to drop the shopping from shopping mall. The quintessential American mall has been a staple on the shopping landscape for decades, but it's been under siege for years from big-box stores, digital competitors and alternative sources of entertainment. A slew of traditional mall retailers have reported dismal earnings over the last week: Macy's is closing another 150 stores as sales continue to slump.

Des Moines city leaders say a decade's worth of property tax-cutting legislation has left them grappling with a crippling budget. In the face of soaring property tax assessments across Iowa in 2023, lawmakers passed House File 718, a bill meant to keep those growing assessments from turning into dramatically higher tax bills for homeowners.

Senate lawmakers are considering would amendment of the state property tax on businesses because court rulings propose the tax is unconstitutional. Right now, every business in the state pays a franchise tax on its operations. This law was made in 1937. The Tennessee governor wants to get rid of it because he's afraid some businesses will sue as they have in other states and Tennessee will be the great damages.

One-third of Wyoming Senate declares conflict, declines to vote on property tax bill

The Wyoming Senate approved a bill to offer a property tax exemption for long-term Wyomingites, despite a large portion of the body declaring a conflict of interest and declining to vote on it. Should it be signed into law by Gov. Mark Gordon, House Bill 3 would exempt 50% of a property's assessed value for homeowners over 65 years old who have paid property taxes in Wyoming for at least 25 years.
