A proposed 0.5 percent increase in North Pole’s sales tax drew opposition at Monday’s North Pole City Council meeting. The tax hike was proposed by Mayor Bryce Ward to stave off service cuts and fill a budget hole created by Flint Hills Resource’s decision to cease refining at their facility in the city. In fiscal terms, North Pole is between a rock and a hard place, and when the council brings the matter to a final vote this coming Monday, they will have to make the unpleasant choice between more taxes or reduced services to the city’s residents.
