South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds has signed a bill streamlining the state's complex maze of tax incentives for small renewable energy projects. The new law makes the first $50,000 of the assessed value of a small to medium renewable energy property, or 70 percent of the assessed value if that figure is greater, exempt from real property tax. Indiana farmland owners will see smaller increases in their property tax bills next year, thanks to legislation Gov. Mitch Daniels signed Thursday. The changes in the formula by which farmland is assessed take effect with 2011 tax bills and are expected to provide more than $75 million in tax relief to Indiana farmers over the next few years, said Greens Fork farmer Luke Bowman, public relations coordinator for Indiana Farm Bureau in Wayne and Fayette counties. Clayton Fulcher Seafood is now just part of the history of Carteret County. The state is trying to ensure that the remaining fish houses don’t face a similar future. For the second year, the state is offering a tax break for the owners of businesses dependent upon the water, like fish houses and piers. Gradually, news of it is spreading. This year eight county businesses participated; however, it’s clear that the tax break alone isn’t a cure-all for the industry’s troubles. Those businesses, an integral part of the county’s culture and economy for years, have been battling a perfect storm of tightening fishing regulations and soaring real estate prices. Read more

METHUEN — A private equity firm has agreed to buy a chain of Catholic hospitals in Massachusetts, including Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, changing the hospitals from nonprofit to profit institutions and subjecting them to property taxes. Read more
