Dallas County faces a $56.5 million budget shortfall this year, mainly because of an anticipated steep drop in property tax revenue, county officials said Tuesday. Property taxes account for half of county revenues. County Budget Director Ryan Brown said $31 million of the shortfall can be attributed to the expected fall in property values. Read more

The idea of a revision to the state’s property tax law - established with passage of Proposition 13 - is not new to Sacramento. It was born, say revision proponents, with the post-Prop 13 realization that what defines a commercial property sale would not be the same as what defines a residential property sale. NEW YORK CITY-One of the key elements of a program for rehabilitating older building stock in Lower Manhattan had its lease renewed, so to speak, as the state legislature voted Monday to extend a tax break for four more years. The abatement in property tax and reduction in commercial rent tax through the city’s Commercial Revitalization Program are available to commercial tenants that take space in pre-1975 buildings south of Canal Street. The measure, sponsored by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and State Sen. Daniel Squadron, has been submitted to Gov. David Paterson for his signature. Read more

Supporters of abolishing North Dakota property taxes may begin gathering petition signatures to put the idea on the ballot.
