Tax breaks no cure for ailing commercial fishing industry

Clayton Fulcher Seafood is now just part of the history of Carteret County. The state is trying to ensure that the remaining fish houses don’t face a similar future. For the second year, the state is offering a tax break for the owners of businesses dependent upon the water, like fish houses and piers. Gradually, news of it is spreading. This year eight county businesses participated; however, it’s clear that the tax break alone isn’t a cure-all for the industry’s troubles. Those businesses, an integral part of the county’s culture and economy for years, have been battling a perfect storm of tightening fishing regulations and soaring real estate prices. Read more
