PROFILE

 

Mr. Van Valen is Senior Counsel in Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck’s Albuquerque office and a member of the firm’s Corporate & Business Department. His practice focuses on state and local tax matters.

Mr. Van Valen counsels clients on New Mexico tax planning and represents clients in administrative and judicial litigation matters, including gross receipts tax, compensating tax, severance tax, tobacco tax, fuel taxes, property tax, corporate income tax, tax incentives and allocation/apportionment issues for multistate corporations. He also has experience in renewable energy projects, Indian law including tax issues and general litigation matters.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Van Valen was a shareholder and director at Modrall, Sperling, Roehl, Harris & Sisk in Albuquerque.

Mr. Van Valen is a frequent lecturer on New Mexico's tax system and tax issues. He has spoken before the Council on State Taxation (COST), the New Mexico State Bar, GeorgetownUniversityState and Local Tax Symposium and the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT), and presented seminars for Lorman Educational Services as well as accounting and other organizations.
