Farmland owners are in for more property tax increases at least into 2015, Purdue Extension agricultural economist Larry DeBoer says. In the Jan. 27 issue of his column "Capital Comments," DeBoer said the base rate for the assessment of an acre of farmland will jump from $1,290 in 2011 to $1,500 in 2012. Indiana farmland owners will see smaller increases in their property tax bills next year, thanks to legislation Gov. Mitch Daniels signed Thursday. The changes in the formula by which farmland is assessed take effect with 2011 tax bills and are expected to provide more than $75 million in tax relief to Indiana farmers over the next few years, said Greens Fork farmer Luke Bowman, public relations coordinator for Indiana Farm Bureau in Wayne and Fayette counties. INDIANAPOLIS — The General Assembly has had its say. Now Indiana voters will get to decide if property tax caps belong in the state's constitution.
